I’m getting ready to start our summer series on the podcast. I’ll be sharing everything, from my body acceptance and self advocacy journey to my favourite products and routines.
The portrayal of folks in larger bodies is negatively stereotyped and stigmatised across the media, this rhetoric perpetuates the idea that fat folks are to blame. That we actively choose not to take care of ourselves.
This completely ignores 2 truths:
Diet culture continually tells us we are not worthy of being taken care of in a larger body, we’ve grown up seeing the anti-fat before and after images… the glow up that supposedly only happens when you are in a smaller body.
Many industries uphold this system. E.g. not catering their clothing above a size XL, or only stocking plus sizes online. Waiting rooms that only have chairs with arms…. Narrow toilet cubicles where your thigh is half on the sanitary bin… booths in restaurants… concert venues… medical settings… and many more spaces
We need to stop assuming that folks in larger bodies are actively choosing not to take care of themselves, and instead question, explore and draw attention to how society and thin people continually exclude us from products, and spaces that would actually allow us to be comfortable and happy in our larger bodies.
Last summer I came across a video talking about personal hygiene for larger bodies, and as I added antibacterial soap to my grocery delivery I wondered what else I’d been unaware of for the past 30+ years.
Over the past twelve months I’ve been researching and testing products, and as the weather starts to get warmer I wanted to share my simple self care routine. This routine is every step I take to keep my body clean, dry and as comfortable as possible before I get dressed. These are not arbitrary rules you should follow, this is a routine I’ve found works for me, and during the colder months I may skip certain steps altogether.
In this bonus episode I’m sharing my simple self care routine, and the attached PDF provides all of the products I’ve tested and researched.
